Our Middle School students spent the morning at the Sheep Breeding Research Station (SBRS) in Sandynallah — a unit of the Centre for Animal Production Studies, Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University — to see what goes into raising a healthy flock. Set across 708 acres of the Nilgiri hills, SBRS works on breeds, breeding, feeding, housing, health care and scientific livestock management, and for one morning it opened its gates to give our students a working look at all five.

Station staff walked the class through the fundamentals: how Nilagiri and Sandyno sheep are identified and selectively bred, what proper housing and feeding protocols look like, and the basic health checks that keep a flock disease-free. The research data boards on the walls turned numbers — altitude, rainfall, herd counts — into a real picture of what running a 700-acre research farm actually involves.

Then the science gave way to the hillside. Students followed a shepherd as he moved the flock across the grass, held lambs for the first time, and stopped by the nursery pen where a fresh batch of newborn lambs wobbled around on unsteady legs — by far the morning's biggest hit. Between the research talks and the photo-ops with the sheep, there was plenty of time to take in the rolling green landscape SBRS is set in.

Nature teaches, and experiences last a lifetime — and a morning spent among a working flock, with real scientists explaining real science, is the kind of lesson our Middle Schoolers won't get from a textbook.
