This week, Grade 9 students took their study of cells beyond the page and into the lab. Following Lesson 2: Cells, learners carried out a hands-on investigation to observe human cheek cells using light microscopes.

After a brief demonstration on safe sample collection, each student collected epithelial cells from their own cheek, prepared a wet mount, and applied methylene blue stain to enhance contrast. The result? A stunning view of the cell membrane, cytoplasm, and prominently stained nucleus — structures they'd previously only seen in diagrams.

The practical reinforced key concepts: cell structure, function, and the importance of staining techniques in biology. More importantly, it gave students confidence in lab skills and a personal connection to the science they're learning. Seeing their own cells sparked thoughtful questions and lively discussion about how our bodies are built at the cellular level.
