Grade 10 traded the classroom for the school garden patch this week, digging in a pooter — a simple insect trap — to observe and study whatever they could find living in the soil around them.

Working in pairs and small groups, the students dug a hole, sunk a container into it, and baited it with a glycerol solution before covering the spot and marking it with sticks. A short wait later, they were back on their knees checking what had wandered in.

It's hands-on ecology at its simplest — a bit of digging, a bit of patience, and a close-up look at the insect life the garden patch has been quietly hosting all along.
