Naming Words Come Alive: Grade 1 Thinks, Sorts and Draws Nouns
17 August 2026
Grade 1’s grammar lesson this week turned naming words into something you could hold up and show off. Working at their desks in the reading corner, students thought through their own examples of people, places, animals, and things, then sorted them into categories before picking up their pencils and crayons to draw each one.
Every child’s sheet became a small, personal gallery of nouns — a house, a bicycle, a favourite animal, a family member — proudly held up for the camera once finished. Turning an abstract idea like “naming word” into something concrete enough to sort and draw is exactly the kind of hands-on step that makes early grammar stick.
A simple activity with a clear payoff: Grade 1 now has a set of nouns they thought up, sorted, and drew themselves — a far stickier memory than a textbook definition.
